July Tenant of the Month: Doris and Jon Butler of Salt Coastal Outfitters
July 3, 2018
Every other month, we’re spotlighting one of our tenants here at The Wharf. This month is the dynamic husband and wife duo Doris and Jon Butler, owners of Salt Coastal Outfitters, the newest boutique at The Wharf. Step into their coastal-cultured shop to learn more. Stay Salty!
Where were you born and raised?
Doris: I was born in Tacoma, Washington and have lived in Germany and Texas.
Jon: I was born in Clearwater, Florida and raised mostly in Kansas. Doris and I both grew up in military families, so we moved around a lot. We actually met in Wichita, Kansas and then relocated down to the Gulf.
How long has your business been at The Wharf?
We’re brand new to The Wharf! Our beach location has been open for three and a half years now.
What sort of goods or services do you provide?
Everything from clothes and jewelry to local art and goods. We always try to change things up!
What does a typical workday involve for you?
Doris: I’m at the beach store six days a week, staying busy providing our guests with the best shopping experience possible.
Jon: Our kids and I will be here at the Wharf location, doing the same!
What’s the most unusual thing that’s happened to you on the job?
Our beach shop is in an old building built in ’49. We had a litter of kittens born right outside our back door and customers loved it.
Who’s the most noteworthy person that’s shopped at your store?
We’ve had a few Bama football players stop in.
What do you love the most about living and working in Orange Beach?
Having lived here for over fifteen years, we love the relaxed, easy-going lifestyle. Friendly locals, great weather, and a chill vibe.
What’s your favorite annual event at The Wharf?
New Year’s Eve celebration, of course!
Other than your own store, what’s your favorite place to shop at The Wharf?
Doris: Bungalows! We have shopped there since the store was in a tiny location in Gulf Shores. It was one of the first places our family visited when we moved here. I’d walk there from our house with our youngest daughter Mimi, three years old at the time, in a little red wagon.
What’s your favorite restaurant at The Wharf?
Villaggio Grille! The pizza flats are our fave!
When it’s playtime, what’s your favorite activity at The Wharf?
We love the movies! We go often on Tuesdays with the whole family.
What’s something your customers might not know about your store?
Jon: We opened Salt on a whim. It started with a few thousand dollars, a name, and a dream. It was always Doris’ dream to open a shop and call it Salt, so we just found a space and made it happen. It was meant to be. All products we order are found uniquely through personal research. Lately, we’ve been trying to get items that zip code protect so you won’t see the same item at our store that you see everywhere else.
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
We love to travel. Family time is very important to us.
What’s your favorite food?
We like Greek and Mexican cuisine and pizza, of course!
What’s your favorite band/musician?
Jon: I’d say Led Zeppelin.
Doris: Definitely Earth, Wind & Fire.
What’s your favorite movie?
Doris: The Breakfast Club!
Jon: Rocky, Rocky II, AND Rocky III.
If you could spend the day with any celebrity or historical figure, who would it be?
Jon: I would say Jesus Christ.
Doris: Elvis Presley, the other king!
Auburn or Alabama?
Doris: I’m not a football fan.
Jon: ROLL TIDE!
